Octopus and Taco Thieves

imageAfter a while I finally came back to ‘Lucha Loco‘ for a friend’s farewell party. For starters I had the ‘Ceviche de Camarones y Pulpo‘ a fantastic refreshing dish full of fresh and sweet prawns and octopus. The texture of the octopus was amazing and just on the spot, firm without being chewy and the lightly sour taste of the lime juice together with the cilantro and herbs made this simply delicious. My favorite non-taco dish here.

imageFor my taco selection this time I went for one of their specials, the ‘Taco de Barbacoa‘ with lovely tenderly braised lamb meat that was juice and strong in taste. A great taco but I would have wished for some more mint in the salsa as it nearly disappeared between all the the other flavors.

imageBy default I had the delicious ‘Taco de Carnitas‘ but this time I also ordered the ‘Taco de Pescado‘ which I didn’t have for a long time. It usually is a little bigger than in the picture but my colleague stole a piece from this nicely grilled snapper before I could stop her. The smaller size didn’t change anything, it still tasted great. The fish was moist and slightly charred on the outside and the combination of the freshness from the salsa and the spiciness from the chipotle made this work perfectly.

Another dinner much and well spend with great food, strong drinks and an outstanding friendly service. Still my kind of place, thanks a lot.

Northern Africa in Central Hong Kong

imageI flew to Hong Kong over the weekend to see a good old friend before his move to Australia. I messed up my room booking so we spend a long time calling up hotels so all the place we planned to have dinner at had already closed. As it was getting late we went to ‘Sahara’ a Northern African restaurant in Soho. As starter we had the ‘Haloumi Salad‘ that tasted deliciously light with a sweetish caramelized dressing. Just the haloumi didn’t make the funny squeeky noises that I was hoping for.

imageAfter we shared the ‘Moroccan Lamb Tagine‘ with ‘Cous Cous‘. The lamb was super moist and tender and the potatoes were cooked just right. The kick though were the dried plums and apricots that I made a brilliant combination. Only off ingredient were the olives which I though were a bit out of place.  We finished it completely soaking the extremely fluffy cous cous with the hearty meaty gravy.

‘Sahara’ is a great buzzing place to start, or like us, end a night with it’s low chairs and tables, soul food, clapping waiters and the option to closing your dinner by smoking a shisha. My second and probably not last time here.

Diner/Bistro Concept at Pacific Plaza

imageA friend told me about this place at Pacific Plaza which is a fusion of ‘L’Entrecote‘, the steak & fries place from Duxton and a modern burger joint with the concept created by Michelin Star Chef Bruno Menard. Half of the shop looks very similar to the french bistro using the same tablecloth and all and the other half looks like a modern style diner with an open concept directly in the mall.

I ordered the ‘Lamb Burger‘  with ‘Truffle Fries‘. When the burger arrived it looked a bit small at first but turned out to be very sufficient and filling. Squeezing the burger into manageable size only very little juice dripped out which could have been a sign for very dry or very well hung meat, thankfully it was the latter. The meat actually was nice and chunky and still juicy inside, maybe a bit too soft for me but well seasoned and meaty in taste nevertheless. The bun was spiked with black sesame seeds, was soft enough but held up pretty good all the way. I was really looking forward to the combination of the mint sauce and the fresh cilantro which I absolutely love but they unfortunately were only hints in the total   mix of flavors. In comparison to that the caramelized raisins and onions came out much stronger and dominant.

The ‘Truffle Fries‘ were nice and crispy with a slight touch of truffle oil which didn’t come out too strong either but there was hardly any salt on them. This might have been just a personal preference of  mine and was solved quickly by the friendly waiter bringing me a salt grinder.

image‘&Made’ is a nice casual place with very friendly staff and most important decent burgers. However I will ask them for a double slap of mint and cilantro in case I should come back here next time which I’m not too sure about as it’s also not the cheapest of places with twenty five dollars ish a burger++. For steak & fries I probably stick with the Duxton branch as the atmosphere is just more bristro and less mall like.

Choco Loco!

imageFinally some errands brought me back to Queensway and as it was so conveniently located I decided to return to ‘De Burg’ to finally try that mystical ‘Choco Lamb Burger‘ which I couldn’t get out of my head since I first saw it on the menu.

To be honest until I had my first bite I was not really sure if this was going to be totally disgusting or weirdly good. For a while I looked at the mayonaise and Nutella with slight disbelief but finally my curiosity won and I anxiously took a big mouthful. Now this was absolutely amazing. It worked so much better together than I ever would have thought. At first it felt like biting into a toasted Nutella roll from my childhood until I tasted that delicious lamb patty and it transformed into a burger. The meat was nicely charred on the outside but juicy and full of flavour on the inside, not too lamby as well. The juices and the chocolate mixing was a real eye opener. I couldn’t believe how fantastic that actually came together and that no one (at least that I know) has ever tried this before. The only ingredient that I reckoned was a bit odd was the tomato. The whole burger disappeared in no time and left me nicely filled and super content.

I was really happy I gave this burger a shot and can’t wait to introduce it to friends but thanks to the guys from ‘De Burg’ I already have another newly introduced burger lined up that wants to be “grubbed on”- ‘The Singhjector‘. Well done guys, you made my day.
